I could listen to music almost all the time without getting sick of it. I have to have it on in the car, like to listen to something when I’m getting ready in the morning and showering at night, and always have something playing in the background while I cook or write. I even sneak in my earbuds at work whenever I get the chance. If you had told me in seventh grade that these would be my musical habits, I probably would have laughed at you. At 12 years old I think I had a total of six songs on my silver iPod nano including, among others, Gwen Stefani’s “Sweet Escape”, and most of my other exposure to music was “The Parent Trap” soundtrack on car rides and my Suzuki violin lessons.

These days I’m listening to…

“Joanne” by Lady Gaga – I love this whole album. A lot of the songs have such a different sound to them than a lot of her previous work, I think. Or maybe I’m totally wrong. But I love “Million Reasons”, “Hey Girl” (love that Florence Welch is in that one), and “Come to Mama” feels like it should be the anthem of the country right now.

“Love on the Brain” by Rhianna – Wasn’t a fan of “Work”, but this one more than makes up for it.

“Starboy” by The Weeknd – the whole thing

La La Land Soundtrack – I’m not a huge fan of the big Broadway musical numbers, but I adored this movie and the music. It wasn’t too showy and it’s so uplifting. Those opening piano chords in “Another Day of Sun”??? I mean… They make me want to pack up and move to LA. If CA successfully secedes from the United States, I’m outta here.

Kaleo, Of Monsters and Men, and Florence and the Machine are also always cycling through my playlist.

So there you have it. Hopefully no one is judging me for my largely Top 40 playlist, but I won’t apologize.

What have you been listening to? I’m always looking for new music.
